Originally built in 1959, James River High School underwent a complete renovation of 101,974 square feet and added new spaces totalling 50,357 square feet. During construction, MB Contractors developed and implemented schedule changes to accelerate occupancy to certain areas of the building. The building remained fully occupied throughout construction. Renovations included all new finishes, mechanical and electrical systems, relocation of the existing chiller with four new ice storage tanks, an upgraded communication system, complete kitchen renovation with new equipment, and new auditorium seating and finishes. 6,401 square feet of lab space included fume hoods, gas and compressed air connections, epoxy resin tops, laboratory-grade casework, eyewash stations, prep rooms, acid waste and vent piping, and Smart Boards. Additions included a new administration area, media center, and athletic facility. The athletic facility featured an all new gymnasium with mechanically retractable bleachers and backstops, home and visitor locker rooms, weight room, wrestling and aerobics room, display cases, concession stand, restrooms, and a new public entrance for sporting events. Outside, baseball and softball fields were added to include a concession stand, restrooms, and a press box. Asphalt paving greatly expanded the staff and student parking, which replaced existing stone parking.
